A current study by the Vienna Chamber of Commerce underlines the important role of the Vienna State Opera as an economic factor. Accordingly, the renowned opera house contributes almost 300 million euros to the gross domestic product (GDP) every year, secures 3,700 jobs and generates 79 million euros in taxes and duties.
Walter Ruck, President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, emphasizes: “The Vienna State Opera is not only a cultural flagship in Austria, but also an economic engine.” The analysis is based on the data from the 2023/24 season and takes into account both the operating expenses of the State Opera and the Expenses of visitors, especially tourists.
In the season mentioned, the State Opera invested around 14 million euros and recorded total expenditure of 145 million euros. This spending resulted in a GDP contribution of 177 million euros, secured 1,700 jobs and generated 44 million euros in taxes and duties. In addition, around 650,000 people attended the State Opera’s music events, with 40 percent of the visitors coming from abroad. The spending of these tourists contributed 119 million euros to GDP, created around 2,000 jobs and led to tax revenues of 35 million euros.
