Punch and mulled wine are hot drinks that quickly become inseparably associated with winter and Christmas. So it makes sense that a regional restaurant invited people to a mulled wine festival last weekend. But things didn’t go so smoothly in Weinstadt near Stuttgart.

Many consumers have had to get used to high prices, for better or for worse, but the combination of paid entry and high prices for food and drinks, which are offered for sale by the organizer itself and not by independent “standers”, is definitely questionable. In addition, the fact that card payments are welcome at the box office, but are not desired when purchasing mulled wine, sausages, etc., and no receipt was given out when asked, leaves a memorable impression.

High price for food and drinks

But when it came to the deposit on cups and plates, which was comparatively low at two euros per item, the organizer took the bureaucracy very seriously. A deposit stamp was also issued with each piece. The plate and/or cup could only be returned to a central location together with the respective brand, otherwise the item could not be returned. It’s surprising that they took it so seriously here, but only accepted cash when buying food and drinks and worked with cash boxes instead of cash registers.

For a red sausage or Thuringian sausage in a roll you had to shell out five euros. For the lard bread you have to put four euros on the counter and goulash with a roll costs nine euros per portion. The quality was in need of improvement, because the service was rather careless, the sausages were put in a small roll, with a little mustard or ketchup on it if desired, in a napkin and pressed into the customer’s hand. The situation was similar with the waffles, which cost five euros. Due to the lack of sufficient bar tables, consuming food and drinks was not exactly possible. There was no seating at all.

There doesn’t seem to be any challenge with the number of tickets, because at the time of the visit the Berner company’s courtyard was already completely overcrowded, so it was difficult to get food and drinks from one point to the other. In general, a lot of patience was required to even get the expensive goods, as you sometimes have to spend 20 minutes or longer in queues. Despite the event location being already completely full, there was an enormously long queue of people waiting at the box office to purchase tickets and therefore to be admitted.

Too few “quiet places” for too many people

The common thread of undersizing also continues with the toilet facilities. Those in the actual Berner company building were locked. Take advantage of the opportunity to have an art Christmas market where all art that could somehow be reconciled with winter and Christmas can be offered for sale. The “toilets” sign led straight to a barrier. Word of mouth then spread that a toilet container had been set up outside.

This offered the men three urinals and a bowl, whereby the sink could only be used when the first stand-up pee facility was unused. For the ladies there were only two toilets. If you take into account the high number of people who were already on the area and still waiting in long queues, this is far too few and, in combination with the entrance fee and high costs for food and drinks, is simply not acceptable. After all, the organizer is a regional company that is located in the upscale sector and not a provider of youth events.

Lots of room for improvement for the coming year

The Berner company’s idea of bringing a mulled wine festival to Weinstadt near Stuttgart and organizing it themselves is commendable. The fact that you take care of the catering yourself is also obvious, since you are successful in the wholesale and retail trade of gourmet goods and are an upper middle class restaurant. But that’s exactly why expectations are high.

The fact that the entry price of 12 euros per person includes a cup of mulled wine or punch worth four euros – exclusive of use – makes it not exactly easy to convince people that this is the case given the high prices for food and drinks of mediocre quality Expectations can be met. Due to the overcrowding of the location, it was difficult to linger and the sound system with old pop music didn’t necessarily make a positive contribution. It remains to be hoped that the organizer will learn from the shortcomings and do better next year.
