Over 300,000 passengers board the seven ships of the DDSG Blue Donau every year to rediscover the Danube in Vienna and the Wachau. The fleet sets off on scheduled and popular themed trips 364 days a year and transforms into a floating event location when chartered. This year, in the somewhat quieter winter period, three ships are heading upstream towards Linz to be brought up to the latest technical standards.
The over 36 meter long MS Wien, which has been sailing under the DDSG Blue Donau flag for ten years, and the over 40 meter long MS Vindobona in the striking Hundertwasser design will receive new air conditioning this winter. The two ships are mainly used in regular services in the federal capital and show their passengers the most beautiful sides of the Danube metropolis. The 57 meter long MS Kaiserin Elisabeth is also swapping the blue Danube for the dry dock. The modern ship, which is often used for private and corporate events and offers space for up to 280 passengers, is getting a new floor on which you can dance on charter and themed trips.
“Every year, DDSG Blue Donau invested around half a million euros in the maintenance and modernization of the fleet. “Due to the ongoing maintenance of the fleet, the seven ships have a long service life,” explains Managing Director Wolfgang Hanreich.
The DDSG Blue Donau nautical team, led by fleet captain Johannes Kammerer, is involved in the maintenance and modernization work and contributes its expertise. The apprentices at Austria’s largest and most traditional inland shipping company in particular appreciate being able to learn about the ships in the dry dock from a different perspective and acquire new practical knowledge.
“During the extensive maintenance work, the DDSG Blue Donau not only consistently increases passenger comfort. By installing modern air conditioning systems, for example, the energy requirements and the dead weight of the ships are reduced. “The high nautical and technical standards also serve sustainability,” says managing director Wolfgang Fischer.
