A Boeing 737-800 operated by Russia’s Nordstar Airlines overshot the end of the runway at Krasnoyarsk Airport on January 9, 2024. According to local media reports, the machine only came to a stop about 30 meters from the end of the paved area.
The Western Siberian prosecutor’s office said they found eight crew members and 169 passengers on board. They were able to leave the Boeing 737-800 uninjured. Passengers would be taken to the terminal by buses. However, the affected aircraft must be towed for safety reasons.
The incident is said to have occurred on January 9, 2024 at around 9:50 a.m. local time during the landing process at Krasnoyarsk Airport. It is currently unclear why the medium-haul jet only came to a standstill after the marked end of the runway. However, the weather may have played a decisive role, as official information suggests temperatures would be around -19 degrees Celsius at this time. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that ice could have formed on the asphalt, which could have massively increased the braking distance.
The public prosecutor’s office has now ordered that the national aviation accident investigation agency NSK investigate the incident. Therefore, immediately afterwards, investigators made their way to Krasnoyarsk Airport.
The current incident is one of a number of incidents that have occurred in the Russian Federation in the recent past. For example, in September 2023, an Airbus A320 operated by Ural Airlines had to make an emergency landing in a wheat field due to a lack of fuel. In December 2023, the crew of an Antonov An-24 mistook a frozen river for the runway. Although all incidents have had a mild reputation so far, the increase in incidents in the Russian Federation is striking.
