In 2006, the UK became the first country in the world to restrict liquids in hand luggage. Shortly thereafter, the entire European Union and other countries followed suit. Now the “sack rule” is about to end in the UK.

Since November 2006, only liquids in containers no larger than 100 milliliters may be carried in hand luggage. In addition, these must be packed in a resealable plastic bag that must not have a capacity of more than one liter. The rule was introduced after attacks that took place in central London due to concerns about plastic and liquid explosives.

The UK will now purchase modern 3D CT scanners for carry-on luggage. According to the BBC, this could make it possible for the “sack rule”, which is now considered rather nonsensical, to fall. The airports should soon receive instructions that the technology must be converted by mid-2024.
