Japan Airlines canceled flight JL11 from Dallas Fort Worth to Tokyo Haneda (Boeing 777-300ER, registration JA742J) on April 24, 2024 after its 49-year-old captain became drunk and exhibited disruptive behavior at a hotel in the United States.
The airline said the captain’s physical and mental condition needed to be assessed, but was unable to find replacement pilots for the scheduled departure. JAL halves 157 passengers to transfer to other flights.
The incident occurred after the captain had dinner with crew members and continued drinking at the hotel, leading to a complaint from a hotel employee and police intervention. The captain received a warning from the police for his behavior. The aircraft returned to Tokyo Haneda the next day without passengers as flight JL11D.
