On June 6, 2024, Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner opened the state finals of the « Safety Tour » in the Dabsch barracks in Korneuburg. The event, organized by the Lower Austrian Civil Protection Association (NÖZSV), is a team competition for children in the third and fourth grades of elementary school and takes place throughout Austria. The aim of the « Safety Tour » is to sensitize young people to safety issues and to practice self-protection.
Defense Minister Tanner praised the students’ achievements as well as the commitment of the volunteers of the NÖZSV and the emergency services who made the event possible. « Their commitment is indispensable for the security of our society, » she emphasized.
The children are motivated to learn safety thinking through playful activities. Between 300 and 500 students took part in the state finals in Lower Austria, supervised by volunteers. The winning team will represent Lower Austria at the national finals on June 18th, where the title of « Safest Class in Austria » will be awarded. Defense Minister Tanner also invited the winning class to visit the new AW169 « Lion » helicopter in Langenlebarn.
The cooperation between the Ministry of Defense and the Austrian Civil Protection Association was strengthened on March 1, 2023 by an agreement in the Rossauer Barracks in order to utilize synergies and better manage possible disasters.
