On the morning of January 18, 2023, an H-225 Super Puma helicopter crashed near the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv. Nine people were caught on board, including Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky, who died.
The helicopter crashed at around 8:20 a.m. in a social center in a suburb of the capital Kyiv. As a result, an ambulance service building, a fourteen-story apartment building and several motor vehicles were severely damaged. Due to the fact that a mark broke out, numerous people were injured on the ground. Around 9:30 a.m., the fire department reported that the fire had been extinguished.
12 children are said to be among the 30 injured people, as there is a care facility in the building. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital. For the occupants of the helicopter, however, any help came too late.
According to the Ukrainian Civil Protection Service, the helicopter involved in the crash was a Super Puma with flight number « 54 », a helicopter that « repeatedly was involved in the performance of tasks of transporting personnel to the places of emergency situations. Among the aircraft of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, this aircraft was used most often, since it provided the ability to transport a sufficient number of people at once. The crew of the ship was prepared for tasks in difficult conditions and has the required number of flight hours precisely on these EC-225 helicopters.”
The cause of the accident is currently being investigated. According to initial reports, the weather at the time of the crash was foggy, but all possibilities are being considered. A connection with the war cannot be ruled out at the moment.
