The US disease agency CDC intends to examine the wastewater from commercial aircraft for new corona variants. The background to the measure is that there are concerns about the wave in the People’s Republic of China.
At the moment, both political opinions and those of virologists are likely to differ widely. Some are calling for entry restrictions to be imposed on those who have previously been in China, and others believe it is not necessary. From the beginning of January 2023, the United States will again require such travelers to submit a negative corona test. It is also now being considered that another test must be carried out two days after arrival in the USA.
The waste water from commercial aircraft has now come into the focus of the CDC, as it expects the investigation to be able to identify any new corona variants. It is also argued that in July 2022, an analysis of the wastewater from two flights from Ethiopia to France brought findings, even though all travelers had previously tested negative for Covid-19.
The CDC is not alone in making this demand, because some virologists in Europe also believe that examining the waste water from commercial aircraft coming from China makes more sense than requiring all passengers to take negative corona tests. Their informative value would only be limited in time, so that it should be more expedient to explicitly order travelers to be tested by the authorities in the event of positive findings.
Some scientists believe that sewage monitoring, which is done in many states via sewers, has so far helped to detect the outbreak of waves about 14 days before. In particular, it can be identified in such a way that there are asymptomatic cases that those who may be infected do not know anything about.
